Action
Take Back The Night in the United States, initiated events in New York in 1976 with the first North American march.
The slogan "Take Back the Night" was first introduced as a theme for a protest march held in San Francisco in 1978. "The Foundation's Board Members and supporters came together to unite the hundreds of events being held under the TBTN banner around the world." 1 This action became a voice for women by women. It was a way of empowering college students and starting a movement to "voice our desire to end the fear and perceived responsibility women experience when it comes to sexual assault, harassment, and other forms of violence." 1 "Claim our bodies, Claim our right,
Take a stand, Take back the night!" Every woman has been taught to fear sexual assault, even though some might not experience it. We as women "are told from the time we are young not to walk alone, not to go out after dark, to avoid strangers and to avoid dangerous areas of town." This development, however, enabled large numbers of women to publicly express their anger against the sexual violence that goes on in common places, usually with the victim blaming that accompanies it. 2
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Free our lives, Take back the night! |
"In the home, in the street, women getting raped, women getting beat!"
